Baking soda volcano: acid–base chemistry at home
The classic baking soda and vinegar experiment explaining neutralization. Ages 6+, 15 minutes.
You will need
- Baking soda — 2 tbsp
- Vinegar — 100 ml
- Food coloring, dish soap
- A bottle and a clay "crater"
Steps
- Pour the soda into the bottle.
- Add a few drops of coloring and dish soap.
- Pour in the vinegar — and watch the eruption!
Why it works
Acetic acid reacts with sodium bicarbonate, releasing carbon dioxide — that gas makes the "lava".
